Here at Sahara Smoke, we have always taken pride in our shisha tobacco, and the process of manufacturing it is hands on, professional, and exciting. With excitement in mind, a day here is not unlike a day at a brewery; that is to say the day is full of creation, sales, and encouragement, minus the drunken stupor.

Another company that is full of creativity is Hookatec. Hookatec is an American based company that innovates new shisha related products. Currently, they boast a whole line of interesting gadgets and gizmos. Most of their products are based off of convenience, but also functionality. A good example of this is the ShishaVac, which is a two-way vacuum for drying hoses, but also boasts a coil burner in the middle for your coals. This makes drying out washable hoses super fast.

hookatec charcoal blazn burner

I recently picked up one of Hookatec’s products for personal use at home, and so far I have had a great experience with it. The Blazn Burner is an infrared coal burner that is designed specifically for shisha coals. It is a stout black box with two infrared elements that heat up to around 1000 degrees fahrenheit. It heats up coals in about 5 minutes or less, with very little smoke or smell.

For the pros, there are a few things I really like about this product. Firstly, the weight and the quality of the heat sinks. After using the Blazn Burner for 10 minutes, the counter surface underneath it was still room temperature. This speak a lot for the quality of the Blazn Burner. The speed at which this thing lights up coals is amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a simple coil burner. For safety, the system actually will shut itself off if it gets too hot, but it will eventually turn back on, so be sure to not leave it unattended.

There are a few downsides to this product though. The metal grate that the coals rest on will wear down over time, especially with heavy use. Hookatec just released a ceramic top for it, so if this becomes a problem, the solution is available. The infrared emitters are good for around 100 hours, but only if they are kept free of ash and oil. Be sure to not touch the glass with your skin when setting the device up, or it will create hotspots on the glass surface and cause them to fail prematurely.

The only other problem is the light from the emitters. Infrared light can damage the eyes, and this is no exception to that, as it emits a huge amount of infrared light. The product should come with a cheap pair of plastic glasses that block infrared light, and this would make the Blazn Burner much safer for the eyes. All in all though, this is a great coal starter, and a product I hope I get to enjoy for years to come. If you are looking for a functional, convenient, and sleek solution to lighting your coals, this beats a coil burner anyday.
